Databases
To find periodical articles use an electronic database. Click on Databases from the sidebar on the right.
General Databases
- CQ Researcher - CQ Researcher is often the first source that librarians recommend when researchers are seeking original, comprehensive reporting and analysis on issues in the news. Founded in 1923 as Editorial Research Reports, CQ Researcher is noted for its in-depth, unbiased coverage of health, social trends, criminal justice, international affairs, education, the environment, technology, and the economy. Reports are published weekly in print and online 44 times a year by CQ Press, a division of Congressional Quarterly Inc.
- Issues & Controversies - A full-text social issues database with articles published by Facts on File. No journals.
- EBSCO - This is the place to start for general research. This group of databases includes: Academic Search Complete, Business Source Complete, Computers & Applied Sciences Complete, CINAHL, PsycARTCLES, ERIC, and more. Articles may be full-text, abstracts, or citations.
Scholarly Journal Databases
- JSTOR - Full-text academic journals covering the humanities, social sciences, and sciences.
- Project Muse - Current full-text journal articles in a wide variety of academic subjects.
- PsycARTICLES - Includes full-text for 63 psychology journals published by the American Psychological Association and other organizations. Coverage is for complete runs of journals going back to the earliest publication date. The earliest journal included goes back to 1894.
- PsycINFO- An abstract database of psychological literature from the 1800s to the present. Contains citations, abstracts, and cited references. Not full-text. Use the periodicals link from the home page to see if we have the journal you need on the shelf. If we do not, we can order it for you through interlibrary loan.
Periodicals
Use the electronic databases to find references to periodical articles on specific topics. If you find a reference to an article in a database that is not full-text, then check the all titles list to see if we have it in hard copy. If we do not have it in hard copy than you may order it through interlibrary loan.
As an alternative to looking for articles on specific topics you may wish to browse a particular sociology journal to get ideas for topics, to see what a journal looks like, or you may just want to read your favorite sociology journal from cover to cover. You can browse journals by title online or by coming to Brown Library and reading the hard copy subscriptions. Here is a list of our hard copy titles in sociology. The links below are for you to browse electronic journals through Project Muse.
