Library Instruction

Welcome to Brown Library, a valuable partner for Virginia Western's students and faculty. Library staff can introduce students to the library and its resources, help students develop information literacy skills, and find sources for research papers. Staff can also prepare specialized instruction for a class at the professor's request.

Request Library Instruction

Library instruction is meant to support an assignment so please include details of the assignment. After you submit the form below, a library staff member will contact you. Instruction sessions are held in the library classroom on the Main Floor, unless you request otherwise. It is important that the instructor remain with the class and participate in it.

ENG 111 Library Instruction

Library staff is pleased to work with faculty teaching ENG 111 and their students. Library instruction for these students covers the following topics:

  • An introduction to library services
  • Sources for topic ideas
  • Tips for using the library catalog
  • The difference between scholarly journals and popular magazines
  • The difference between the open Internet vs. licensed library databases (reliability, authority, etc.)
  • Strategies for searching library databases and for accessing them from off-campus
The session can be personalized to better support your students’ needs. A librarian will contact you shortly after you submit the request form. Instruction sessions are held in the library classroom on the Main Floor, unless you request otherwise. It is important that the instructor remain with the class and participate in it. Please schedule as far in advance as possible; we need at least one week’s notice in order to create an effective instructional session.
