LAPTOP CIRCULATION POLICY

The library’s laptops are only for Virginia Western students. Students who check out a laptop must provide a photo ID, and they must sign a form acknowledging that they have the laptop and agree to return it by the end of the loan period. For more information, please call the circulation desk at 857-6332.

Loan Period

The loan period is 14 days. Please return the laptop within 14 days. You may renew the laptop for another 14 days if nobody else has reserved it. You must bring the laptop to the library in order to renew it. Renewals by phone are not permitted.

Power cord

A carrying bag is checked out with each laptop. The bag also contains a special power cord for recharging the laptop. When you return the laptop, make sure you also have the power cord in the bag.

It is possible that a newly borrowed laptop may not be fully charged. Be sure to allow enough time for the laptop to recharge with the power cord before you need to use it for a long period without the cord.

Software

Installed on the laptop are Microsoft Office 2007 and other software used in VWCC classes. Also, the laptop has a wireless Internet capability. The computer bag contains a handout explaining how to activate the wireless connection.

Saving your documents

Note of warning: any documents, files, or new software that you store or install on the laptop's "C" drive will be automatically erased when the laptop is shut down or rebooted. This includes documents stored in the My Documents folder. Instead, store your files on your own external drive which you can plug into one of the laptop's two USB ports. We advise using a USB flash drive, which can be acquired cheaply at places like Best Buy and Circuit City.

Replacement cost

Failure to return the laptop by the due date will cause us to place a Negative Service Indicator on your student records, which will have to be removed before you can register for classes or get transcripts. The replacement cost for a lost or destroyed laptop is $500. Your failure to return the laptop or pay for it may force the college to turn the debt over to a collection agency or to offset the debt against your state income tax refund.
