Magnetic Levitation for Future Transportation (rising grades 4-6)
M-F 6/9-6/13, 9:00AM-12:00PM, cost: $155
Build your own "futuristic Maglev" car to race and take home. In 1999 a Japanese five-car maglev train set a record of 345 miles/hour. Yours won’t go that fast, but we will have fun building it and learning how it operates. Learn about the relationship between magnetism and electricity. You will also get to build a simple maglev track as well as a cool electromagnet. Learn how motors work, as well as generators. Build and take home the world’s simplest motor. Make your own compass and take part in many other magnificent magnetic activities!

Horticulture — Reap What You Sow (rising grades 4-7)

Students will learn the vegetable gardening process from start to finish. Seed sowing, crop scheduling, soil preparation, transplanting, fertilization, watering, plant care, insect and disease control, harvesting and food storage, garden clean up, composting, building a compost bin, dormant garden, deer and rodent protection, harvesting and storing seeds, and sustainable vegetable gardening. Students should also learn about helping and serving others from a standpoint of gardening and sharing of the harvest.

Exploring Your World! Locally and Globally (rising grades 5-10)
M-F 6/16-6/20, 9:00AM-12:00PM, cost:$95
How would you like to explore your world both locally and globally? What could you do with maps to help you solve a problem? How can seeing information on a map help you or businesses make better choices? Have you ever wanted to go on a modern treasure hunt? This class will 'open your eyes' to new ways to see the world and interpret the world around you.
Tools utilized will include Google Earth, ArcView GIS, and GPS units.

Fast and Furious Keyboarding (rising grades 4-6)
M-F 6/9-6/13, 9:00AM-12:00PM, cost:$125
How fast can you go without looking at your hands!
Fast and furious keyboarding classes teach beginning keyboarders how to move from hunt and peck to coordinated touch typing. This class is for children who want to get the best performance from a keyboard. The goal in teaching keyboarding is to develop proper techniques without concern for typing speed. Typing speed will evolve from practicing good technique.

Girls In Construction (Girls, rising grades 7-12)

Exploring new opportunities for women in construction, participants will enjoy hands-on projects and explore blueprint design & solid modeling using Autodesk Inventor and the 3D Printer. Projects will include electricity, welding and carpentry. (Sponsored by: National Association of Women in Construction)

Digital Photography (rising grades 4-9)
M-F 6/16-6/20, 9:00AM-12:00PM, cost:$95
The basic rules of composition and lighting will be explored as all great photographers should know. We will study about well-known photographers such as Ansel Adams and Steve McCurry. You will learn to use your digital camera's or smartphone's different settings and applications to create lasting images. After image is saved we will use photo editing software or multi-media to enhance or distort the images to make a finished art show worthy piece of artwork. Please bring your own digital camera or smartphone fully charged with your devices USB cord with a 4 GB memory card.

Digital Photography II (rising grades 4-9)
M-F 8/11-8/15, 9:00AM-12:00PM, cost:$95

White Light - Lasers - Galaxies and Then Some (rising grades 4-6)
M-F 7/14-7/18, 9:00AM-12:00PM, cost:$155
Have fun exploring science as an exciting process of investigation. Each day we conduct experiments, discover the amazing, and test our own ideas. You will learn about LASERS. Dancing, swirling, pulsating laser light will be part of our Laser Light Show. Work with our light blitzer as a laser light flashes to music. We will conduct experiments with our LASER POINTER plus lenses and mirrors as we have fun and learn. Build and take home your own kaleidoscope, spectroscope, periscope and constellation watcher. Watch the constellations in our room and learn about all the planets as you take our 3-D Adventure into outer space! This workshop will be a De-Light-ful hands-on experience.

Robotics (rising grades 6-9)
M-F 7/21-7/25, 9:00AM-3:00PM, cost:$145 This camp will be an exciting introduction to Science, Engineering and Technology through the design of an autonomous robot. Students attending the Robotics camp will receive hands-on experience with computer programming, industrial robotics and computer animation. Current applications of the technology is presented using state-of-the-art equipment and material. The faculty will involve students in discussion and activities that will expand their knowledge and understanding of engineering and advanced technology while encouraging future interest in these fields. The camp will promote an atmosphere of fun as well as the importance of good study habits and learning discipline that lead to both educational and career pathways.
This camp will prepare teams to participate in VWCC's Autonomous Robotics competition in December 2014 at Virginia Western Community College.

The Human Body Shop (rising grades 7-9)
M-F 6/23-6/27, 9:00AM-12:00PM, cost:$125
What makes the human body so unique. What makes your heart beat and your blood flow! Why is good nutrition and exercise so important to your daily living. Students will learn the following: CPR certification; how to assess vital signs; how x-rays are produced; and learn the importance of good nutrition and exercise.

BLACK ROCKET CAMPS
The magic in every camper comes to life as never before when they are empowered to be as creative as they were all born to be! Black Rocket has over a decade of experience designing camps in the S.T.E.M and Digital Arts fields. Every program is powered by the camper’s innate imagination and designed to bring their ideas to life in a fun, hands-on, learning environment. From concept to creation students will demonstrate their masterpiece to the world at the end of each week! All Black Rocket programs mirror real life experiences and the collaborative nature of the design process. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

App Attack! Make Your First Game App (rising grades 4-9)

Take the first steps into the world of mobile app design and customize your own game app! Using a specialized game development tool, students will explore the world of phone-based and tablet applications. In addition to learning the basics of mobile app design and game development, you will also see firsthand how the world of App’s publishing functions. Student created apps will be accessible on a private site and can be played on any mobile device or computer. Parents may choose to publish apps if certain criteria are met and final decisions are the sole discretion of Apple or Google. No prior experience is necessary and students do not need to own a smart phone or tablet to take the class.

Make Your First Video Game! (rising grades 4-9)
M-F 7/7-7/11, 9:00AM-12:00PM, cost:$160
If you love playing video games, this is the camp for you! Make your first video game in this one-of-a-kind class that shows you the crucial keys to designing your first 2-D game. Conceptualization, play experience, challenge levels, graphics and elements, music and sound, software, and simple coding are just some of the concepts that we’ll explore as you learn how to really get into the game because you made it yourself! No prior experience necessary just a desire to have fun. Student created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Games are only compatible on PC computers, Mac versions can be created after the program for a $15.00 conversion fee.

New! App Adventures! The Next Level (Updated for 2014!) (rising grades 4-9)

Continue your quest to make the next viral app! Whether you want to move past the basic techniques learned in App Attack or want to jump right in, we are ready for you! All students will choose from a selection of different mobile app types and explore more in depth programming concepts. Student created apps will be accessible on a private site and can be played on any mobile device or computer. Make Your First 3-D Video Game! (rising grades 4-9)

By popular demand, we are now offering a 3-D game design class. This experience allows you to develop a game concept that goes well beyond the limitations of the traditional classes. Students will learn the physics behind 3D Game Design and explore event scripting, level design, controlling flow of game play, and story-telling. Designed for young adults who have the desire to focus in Game Design in high school or college. Student created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family.

LEGO VIDEO Games (rising grades 4-9)
M-F 7/28-8/1, 9:00AM-12:00PM, cost:$160
Combine your two favorite activities: LEGOs and Video Games! Students will create your own LEGO universe, characters, and adventures in an interactive 2-D Video Game. Everyone is welcome in this one of a kind class. At the end of the program, leave with a LEGO 2-D game that can be shared with friends and family. Student created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Games are only compatible on PC computers, Mac versions can be created after the program for a $15.00 conversion fee.

New! Minecraft Designs (rising grades 4-9)
M-F 8/4-8/8, 9:00AM-12:00PM, cost:$160
If you love the game Minecraft, but always wanted to design your own characters and buildings for your games this class is for you. Learn the basics of creating 3D modeling using a new industry grade software to design your very own characters and import them into your favorite Minecraft games. Students must have Minecraft at home to import characters and parent email address is required to create student accounts.
