Institutional Effectiveness

Student Achievement Goals

To focus on the success of all of our students, Virginia Western Community College has adopted the following student achievement goals. These goals are similar to measures in place or under consideration at other community colleges across the country. Virginia Western's results for these goals, along with much other information about the college, are available in the Virginia Western Fact Book.

Federally-required "cohort" measures are also found in the Virginia Western Fact Book. These measures were originally designed for four-year colleges with traditional students, and do not translate well to community colleges such as Virginia Western which serve more diverse populations.

Curricular and Dual Enrollment Students

Of all students enrolled in during the academic year, what is their status as of the next fall? Successful status categories include GraduatedTransferred to a four-year institution prior to graduation, and Still enrolled.

Dual Enrollment

Context: More than 25% of Virginia Western's students are also still enrolled in their local high school.

Goal: At least 75% of dual enrollment students will have a successful status in the following fall.

What happens to the other students? Students may decide to continue in regular high school classes rather than dual enrollment, or may graduate from high school and not continue their education immediately.

Developmental Education Students

Context: About half of Virginia's community college students require some developmental education in order to have fully college-ready skills in English and/or math. This is true at Virginia Western as well as across the state.

Goal: At least 55% of developmental education students taking a developmental education course in the fall will have a successful status in the following fall.

Curricular Students

Context: About half of Virginia Western's students are in a curriculum of study designed to lead to an associate degree or a certificate.

Goal: At least 65% of program-placed students will have a successful status in the following fall.

What happens to the other students? Students have many reasons to not fall into the "successful status" categories. They may have gained enough through their classes to be hired directly in their field of study. They may decide that college is not the right choice for them at the moment. They may stop-out from college, intending to continue their education at a later date.

Other Students Taking Credit Classes

Context: About 20% of Virginia Western's students are not enrolled in a curriculum of study. These students take individual classes to learn new work skills, or for personal enrichment.

Goal: At least 85% of the credits taken by these students will be completed successfully (grade of A, B, C, P, or S).

Post-Graduation Goals

Licensure Exam Pass Rates

Context: Some fields, particularly in the health professions, have licensure exams. Individuals may have to pass the exam to be fully eligible for employment in their field of study.

Goal: Pass rates will be above the national average for all programs with licensure exams.

Transfer Rates after Graduation

Context: About half of the certificates and associate degrees awarded by Virginia Western are in programs designed to prepare students to study for a bachelor's degree at a four-year college or university.

Goal: At least two-thirds (67%) of graduates in transfer-related programs will enroll at a four-year institution within one year of graduation.
