Virginia Western Community College is committed to serving the needs of English speakers of other languages.
ESOL Programming:
To meet the needs of ESOL students, we offer an array of courses designed for learners at a variety of levels.
We appreciate the barriers faced by many of our ESOL students including transportation concerns, family and work responsibilities, as well as financial limitations.
To meet these needs we offer the following courses:
- ESLA 2665: English for Speakers of Other Languages. This is a non-credit class designed for students who are beginning to learn to read, write, and speak the English language. The cost for this class is $65. No other tuition is required. Books are provided, but students will need to purchase a workbook. This class is offered in the evenings every semester.
- EDUC 2150: Topics in English. This is a non-credit class designed for students preparing to take the COMPASS placement test in English. It focuses on basic reading and writing skills. It is offered during the day and is a good option for students looking for and ESOL class, who can’t take an evening class.
- English 04: Reading Improvement I. This is a four credit class which helps students improve their reading processes to increase their understanding of reading materials. It includes word forms and meanings, comprehension techniques, and ways to control reading pace. The college’s regular tuition rate applies to this course.
- English 01: Preparing for College Writing I. This is a four credit class designed to help students discover and develop writing processes needed to bring their proficiency to the level necessary for entrance in to their respective curricula. The course guides students through the process of writing paragraphs. The college’s regular tuition rate applies to this course.
- English 03: Preparing for College Writing II. This is a three credit class designed to help students discover and develop writing processes needed to bring their proficiency to the level necessary for entrance in to their respective curricula. The course guides students through the process of turning paragraphs into essays. The college’s regular tuition rate applies to this course.
- English 07: Preparing for College Reading and Writing. This is an eight credit class designed to help students discover and develop writing processes needed to bring their proficiency to the level necessary for entrance in to their respective curricula. This class combines the material from English 04 and English 01/03, as well as providing students with guest speakers, field trip options, and cultural activities. The college’s regular tuition rate applies to this course.
