The Humanities division houses a diverse group of departments and programs, including the art, English, public speaking, PE, foreign language, music, and theatre departments, as well as the communication design, general Studies, liberal arts, and wellness programs of study. There is something for everyone in the Humanities division.
For students considering transfer, the general studies and liberal arts programs offer the core classes required by most four year institutions. These degrees are flexible enough to allow the graduate to pursue most bachelors’ degrees. For those that plan to spend just one year at Virginia Western before transferring, the General Education certificate provides a strong foundation in the core educational competencies and provides students with a competitive advantage when transferring.
The Communication Design program at Virginia Western is a fast paced and professionally focused program focusing on the technical and design skills need to transfer or find employment in the design industry. Our program has routinely produced the highest quality communication design and advertising talent in the region for over a decade. Our 24 month program structure allows for a quick start into a new and rewarding career. Contact us and get your future started today!
Health and Physical Education offers a career studies certificate in wellness designed to focus on individual and personal wellness, health and fitness. A new certificate in exercise science and personal training is slated to be available in Fall of 2008. This certificate will provide coursework to develop skills for the student seeking to be a personal trainer or complete coursework that has the potential to lead to other exercise science careers. The physical education department has expanded offerings in contemporary fitness and includes traditional courses along with Yoga, Tai Chi, hip hop aerobic dance, cardio-sculpt, as well as martial arts, step aerobics and weight training. A new fitness/wellness center, scheduled to open fall 2008, will enhance both the health and physical education classes, providing a working lab setting for personal training and relevant health issues.
In addition to our academic programs, the Humanities division sponsors the community art collection, which is open to the public year-round; the VWCC art gallery, which houses rotating shows of professional and student work; and the theatre, which produces three shows per year, including the children’s play in February of each year.
