Introduction
PHARMACY TECHNICIAN PROGRAM
The Pharmacy Technician program is designed to prepare students to assist and support licensed pharmacists in providing health care and medications to patients. Students will obtain a broad knowledge of pharmacy practice and be skilled in techniques required to order, stock, and package, prepare, and dispense medications under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The curriculum has been approved by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy to meet the training requirements necessary for pharmacy technician registration. Upon completion of the program students are eligible to take the Virginia state pharmacy technician registration exam leading to licensure.
Pharmacy technicians work in hospitals, retail, home health care, nursing home, clinic, nuclear medicine labs, and mail order prescription pharmacies. Pharmacy technicians have been employed with medical insurance, medical computer software, drug manufacturing, drug wholesale, and food processing companies, and as instructors in pharmacy technician programs. Currently, hospitals, home health care and retail pharmacies hire the majority of technicians.
The 28 credit career studies program is designed so students can complete their course of study in two semesters. The second semester allows students to participate in two internship components of on-the-job-training: one in a retail pharmacy and the other in an institutional pharmacy environment.
Students applying to the program must meet the college’s general admissions requirements as well as specific requirements for the pharmacy technician program. Please call Rose Peters at 540-857-7314 and an information packet will be mailed to you. You may also call Shirl Lamanca at 540-857-6285 if you have questions about the program or internships.
Applications will be accepted until the end of spring semester or until the program is full. By applying early you may benefit from advising and receive updates on the requirements and admissions process.
