Giving To Virginia Western

Current Initiatives

The Virginia Western Educational Foundation has several current initiatives that serve to answer the growing need for educational opportunities in the Roanoke Valley. Donors may designate their gift to support any of the initiatives below.

Community College Access Program

The City of Salem Community College Access Program began in 2008 as a public-private partnership between the City of Salem and the Virginia Western Educational Foundation. Designed as a pilot program, the program provides full-tuition support to those 2008 graduates of Salem High School who meet the program requirements.

Plans are underway to expand this program to the other localities in Virginia Western's service region and private support is critical to that effort. For more information on the Community College Access Program, please contact the Foundation at 540.857.6020

Annual Scholarships

The Virginia Western Educational Foundation provides numerous annual scholarships to support academic excellence and for those students demonstrating financial need thanks to our many generous donors. Annual scholarships are designed so that the funds collected each year are distributed to scholarship recipients and must be replenished each year. Donors may choose to support one of the current annual scholarships below or create their own. For more information on how to create an annual scholarship, please contact the Educational Foundation at 540.857.6020.

Endowed Scholarships

The cost to attend Virginia Western, while significantly less than four-year colleges and universities, is a hardship for many students. The cost of tuition for a full-time student who is a Virginia resident is currently $2,129.76. With the cost of books and supplies also rising to an average of $1,000 a year, a typical student can expect to pay over $3,000 a year in tuition and expenses.

You can make a significant difference in the lives of deserving students. Endowing a named scholarship will continue to help students in perpetuity and leave a lasting legacy for your family or organization.

  • A contribution of $15,000, which may be funded over a maximum of ten years, provides funds for books and other related expenses for qualifying VWCC students.
  • A $30,000 contribution, which also may be funded over a maximum of ten years, provides tuition expenses for qualifying VWCC students.

These funds are invested and conservatively earn an average of eight percent annually, which grows the fund and the scholarship award amounts over time. Each year you will receive an account statement that details the performance of your endowed fund.

To see how you can make a difference in students' lives, contact the Educational Foundation at 540.857.6020.
