IRS Data Retrieval Tool Outage
Alert: The IRS Data Retrieval Tool which students and families use to import tax information into the FAFSA is unavailable until further notice. If you are completing your FAFSA you should have your and/or your parents' 2015 income tax information and W-2s with you as you complete the application.
We suggest that you request Income Tax Return Transcripts at the time you file your FAFSA. You may be asked to submit these after your FAFSA has been processed by the Department of Education and the college. Virginia Western will notify you by email and in the Student Information System if you need to submit Tax Return Transcripts. You do not need to submit them unless we ask you to do so. Having them on hand if requested may speed up the process for you. Instructions for obtaining Tax Return Transcripts are available here.
If you/your parents did not file taxes, you should request a Verification of Nonfiling letter from the IRS using the 4506-T form (available at irs.gov). Instructions for requesting a Verification Nonfiling letter are available here, and a sample completed 4506-T form is available here. It may take a few weeks to receive the letter from the IRS, so it is best to request the letter when you complete the FAFSA.
