A faculty member may be offered a teaching overload of not more than 10 credit hours per academic year (fall and spring semesters). Faculty members shall be considered as working an overload when they teach greater than thirty (30) credit hours or greater than forty (40) contact hours; in cases where the number of hours for a full teaching load falls below twenty-four (24) credit hours, a faculty member shall be considered as working an overload when he/she teaches greater than forty-eight (48) contact hours.
Extra pay for an overload shall be the rate of the faculty member's nine-month salary multiplied by .015 for each overload credit hour. Overloads shall be paid at the end of the academic year (fall and spring semesters). If separation occurs after only one semester in that academic year and an overload was taught in that semester, payment for the overload shall be at the end of that semester.
A faculty member will earn an annual overload payment if any one of the following three conditions occur:
where > is read "greater than"; > is read "greater than or equal to"; < is read "less than"
When an annual overload occurs, the number of overload credits is determined by calculating (a) and (b) below and selecting the larger of the two:
The full-teaching load for the summer term is ten (10) workload credit hours. In Summer 2002, for the first ten credit hours, summer pay shall be the rate of the faculty member's nine-month salary multiplied by .0266 for each workload credit hour. Beginning Summer 2004, the rate shall be changed to .0282 for each workload credit hour. Faculty may be offered a teaching overload of not more than three (3) credit hours or equivalent during the summer term. Pay for overloads shall be at overload rates (1.5% of the nine-month salary per credit hour). A faculty member shall not be allowed to teach more than seven (7) credits in a five-week summer session. During the summer term, contact hours for laboratory courses are converted to workload credit hours at the rate of one (1) workload credit hour for each two (2) laboratory contact hours.
Faculty who are given release time from normal teaching duties in order to work on special activities shall earn workload credits at the rate of one (1) workload credit hour for each forty (40) clock hours of work. If, for example, a release time assignment required 60 clock hours to complete, then the faculty member's workload would be credited with 1.5 credit hours.
Adjunct faculty are offered semester contracts only. Appointments for subsequent semesters are subject to the needs of the College and your acceptance by the College for future employment. Contracts are entered into with the assumption that the instructor will personally meet each class during the semester. Adjunct faculty are required to provide a minimum of one hour per week for each course to be available to work with students. The Division Dean or department head in charge of your teaching area will be responsible for informing you of information needed for tax forms, verification of U.S. citizenship, and teaching/educational credentials. Hours taught and course length will impact Payroll. Division Deans will provide payroll information to adjunct faculty members.
Adjunct salaries are determined by multiplying the credit hour teaching load by the faculty member’s rate per credit hour. The rate per credit hour is based on the faculty member’s background, experience, and lecturer rate. The salary rates per credit for the different adjunct faculty ranks are shown in the table below, VCCS Adjunct Faculty Rates.
Effective 07/01/2012; rates are per semester credit hour; maximum increased by 7%
When an adjunct member is first employed, the faculty member is assigned an adjunct rank (Assistant Instruct − Professor). Minimum qualifications for the ranks are shown on the VCCS 29.
It is the adjunct faculty member’s responsibility to request a review of their qualifications when the faculty member believes that they qualify for a promotion. The request should be submitted to the Division Dean who has administrative responsibility for the instructional area involved.
