Community Support

Q: Why was the program created?

A: The objectives of the City of Salem Community College Access Program are to:

  • To raise public awareness that a post high school education is essential to earning a living wage.
  • To overcome the real and perceived financial barriers to a college education and raise public awareness that college education is accessible and affordable.
  • To enable Salem High School students to continue their education in preparation for good, well-paying jobs within the region and/or transfer to a 4 year college.
  • To provide an educated and well-qualified workforce for the City of Salem.
  • To provide an incentive for young people to remain in the area.

Without the support generous organizations, businesses, and individuals the City of Salem Community College Access Program (SCCAP) cannot exist.

Q: How is the SCCAP funded?

A: The program is a private/public partnership formed to support a community college access program for the City of Salem.  The program is funded by federal financial aid, public funds, and private funds. Approximately $150,000 in support is needed annually from non-federal public and private sources to benefit 100 Salem students. The City of Salem and the Virginia Western Community College Educational Foundation have committed funds to support the program and seek partnerships with other foundations, corporations, businesses, and individuals to sustain the
