Community Support
Q: Why was the program created?
A: The current high school graduation rate of Roanoke City Schools is a disappointing 52%, and the City's drop-out rate is the tenth highest in the state (VA Department of Education.) The program is designed to raise the expectations and achievement levels of Roanoke City students by connecting grades and graduation to an assured post high school education and even directly to a career. When students see a clear connection from their results in high school (GPA and Graduation) to results for their life, they will increase their engagement during the high school years.
The objectives of the program are:
-
To raise public awareness that a post high school education is essential to earning a living wage.
-
To overcome the real and perceived financial barriers to a college education and raise public awareness that college education is accessible and affordable.
-
To enable Roanoke City students to continue their education in preparation for good, well-paying jobs within the region and/or transfer to a 4-year college.
-
To provide an educated and well-qualified workforce for the City of Roanoke.
-
To provide an incentive for young people to remain in the area.
Without the support generous organizations, businesses, and individuals the Roanoke Community College Access Program cannot exist.
Q: How is the Roanoke CCAP funded?
A: The program is a private/public partnership formed to support a community college access program for the City of Roanoke. The program is funded by federal financial aid, public funds, and private funds. Approximately $400,000 in support is needed annually from non-federal public and private sources to benefit 275 or more students.
