NEW – Travel and FLSA Policy

A new policy for Virginia Western Community College employees, “Travel and FLSA”, is available on VW Connect under Human Resources/Policies and Procedures.

This policy addresses employees who are non-exempt from the Fair Labor and Standards Act (FLSA) and participates in business-related travel.

Virginia Public Service Week Recognition Event – Wednesday, April 9th!

Every May, state agencies across Virginia will celebrate the hard work and dedication that state employees provide to the Commonwealth of Virginia through recognition events in honor of Virginia Employee Public Service Week.

Due to the operational challenges that Virginia Western faces during the traditional recognition period, we will be celebrating Virginia Employee Public Service Week on Wednesday, April 9, 2014:

Wildwood Smokehouse will cater this event providing you pulled chicken and pork, BBQ beans, potato salad, cole slaw and a dinner role.

For your additional pleasure, an assortment of challenges will be available:

  • Jelly Beans Guessing Game   Be the employee to guess the closest amount of jelly beans and win the jar of candy!
  • Name that Employee and Recognition Line-Up  Have fun while you eat by matching recognition statements made on You Make the Difference Cards to the recipient, and identifying pictures of co-workers.  The employee that matches the most correct responses will receive a prize!

You will also have the opportunity to recognize an accomplishment or a noteworthy action of a co-worker on a paper brick wall for the college’s Wall of Fame.  Three (3) employees will be awarded a recognition reward based on the recognition action (brick) completed by your peers.  The VWCC bricks will be proudly displayed on the college's Wall of Fame during the traditional Public Service Week, May 4 – 10th.

Chancellor’s Fellowship for Classified Staff – Application Deadline April 15, 2014

The Chancellor is pleased to announce a fellowship program for community college and System Office classified staff.  For the 2014-2015 academic year, selected classified staff employees will be named as Chancellor’s Fellows to pursue degree studies that will enhance their ability to contribute to the community college mission.

The Chancellor’s Fellowship includes the following:  1) Financial support for tuition and mandatory fees.  2) One semester or one academic year leave of absence with ¾ pay. 3) Continuation of insurance, retirement, the State’s portion of health insurance, and seniority.  This program only supports full-time study.

To be eligible to apply, classified employees must:  1) Be employed 3 consecutive years (as of the date of application) in a full-time state-funded classified position at a community college or the System Office. 2) Be enrolled or accepted in a degree program from a Virginia state-supported institution of higher education. 3) As an employee of VWCC, be recommended by Dr. Sandel.

To apply:  1) Submit a completed application form.  2) Include 3 letters of endorsement. 3) Submit verification of acceptance in a degree program. 4) Submit transcripts if currently enrolled in a program.

Application deadline:  April 15, 2014

VRS Hybrid Open Enrollment

Open Enrollment for VRS Members

January 1, 2014 – April 30, 2014

The VRS Hybrid Retirement Plan combines the features of a defined benefit plan and a defined contribution plan.  VRS members may opt-in to the plan during the open enrollment period which ends April 30, 2014.

Who is Eligible to Opt-In?

At Virginia Western, only current VRS members are eligible to opt-in.  Optional Retirement Plan (ORP) and Virginia Law Officers' Retirement System (VaLORS) are not eligible to opt-in.

Is The Plan Right For You?

You can answer this question by attending one of the following informational sessions all located in the Human Resources Training Room in Fishburn Hall:

Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at 10 a.m.

Thursday, April 17, 2014 at 2:30 p.m.

Current VRS members are not affected by the new plan; however, you do have the opportunity to opt-in. If you do not wish to opt-in, you do not need to do anything!

If you are considering opting into the plan, you are strongly encouraged to attend one of these informational sessions.

Your decision to enroll in the Hybrid is irrevocable.

Washington National Visit Extended through Thursday!

A representative from Washington National (formerly Conseco) Insurance Co. will be at the college on March 18-20 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Human Resources Testing Room representing new life benefits and supplemental health benefits. In 10 minutes the representative will review their plans and special money back provisions. No appointment is needed.  As this is a work-related event, no leave usage to attend is required; however, as always, please check with your supervisor for approval to attend.

Everyone that comes by for a one-on-one presentation the vendor will provide a free gift with no obligation to purchase.  The vendor is also providing breakfast food and a special food treat on St. Patrick’s Day.  Washington National states if they see at least 40 VWCC employees that they will raffle off a flat screen TV.
