Safety / Workers’ Compensation Tip of the Week….

September is National Preparedness Month. The 2014 National Preparedness Month theme is “Be Disaster Aware….Take Action to Prepare!”  During the month of September, you will receive information via the Daily Bulletin to help you increase your emergency preparedness awareness.

As you prepare for an emergency or disaster, tailor your plans and supplies to your specific daily living needs and responsibilities.  As part of tailoring your plans, consider working with others to create networks of neighbors, relatives, friends and co-workers who will assist each other in an emergency.  Discuss your needs and responsibilities and how people in the network can assist each other with communication, care of children, pets or specific needs like the operation of durable medical equipment.  Create your own personal network for specific areas where you need assistance.

Resources:

CERT – Community Emergency Response Team

Roanoke Valley CERT members undergo an intensive training program that provides basic response skills needed for fire safety, light search and rescue, community disaster support, disaster medical operations and traffic control.  Emergency services personnel are best equipped to respond to emergencies.  Roanoke Valley CERT members are trained to support the area’s first responders.  During non-emergency situations, Roanoke Valley CERT members educate their communities about disaster preparedness through outreach opportunities.

Upon completion of the CERT program, members will be able to:

  • Describe the types of hazards that are most likely to affect their homes and communities.
  • Take steps to prepare for a disaster.
  • Identify and reduce potential fire hazards in homes and workplaces.
  • Conduct triage under simulated disaster conditions.
  • Perform head-to-toe patient assessments.
  • Employ basic treatments for various wounds, and apply splints to suspected fractures and sprains.
  • Describe ways to protect rescuers during light search and rescue operations.

For additional information or to join the Roanoke Valley CERT, please send your contact information or call (540) 985-0131, extension 502.

Please contact Heidi McClintic (hmcclintic@virginiawestern.edu or 857-6331) in the Human Resources Department for additional information concerning Workers' Compensation and/or safety in the workplace.   Remember….Safety First!
