Free “Roanoke Valley Reads Book” for VWCC Students

In celebration of Roanoke Valley Reads 2014, Brown Library and Student Activities are partnering to provide 30 free copies of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet for current VWCC students. Book giveaway times are at 11:00am and 5:00pm on Thursday, September 18. The first 15 students who bring their student ID or class schedule to the top floor of Brown Library at or after the designated times and ask for the book will receive a free copy.

Faculty and staff --- We didn’t forget about you! Two copies of the book are on reserve now at the Circulation Desk and available for you to check out.

Roanoke Valley Reads is a community-wide reading experience that brings people together, promotes tolerance and understanding of differing points of view, and emphasizes the importance of literacy.

Asian Studies Book Collection on Display in Brown Library

Brown Library is currently displaying the beautiful new books provided through the National Endowment for the Humanities Bridging Cultures-Asian Studies Grant. This collection was acquired thanks to Virginia Western’s participation with UVA in a program called, “Understanding the Non-West: Strengthening Global Humanities at Virginia’s Community Colleges.” The goal is to boost global humanities in Virginia’s community colleges and enrich appreciation for the cultural traditions, literature, and cinema of India, China, Japan, Eastern Asia, and Russia.

This special collection is on display and available for check-out on the top floor of the Brown Library Building:

Mon-Thurs: 8am-8pm

Fri: 8am-5pm

Sat: 9am-1pm

Looking For Your Keys?

Your keys to academic success are located on all three floors of Brown Library.

BROWN LIBRARY, GROUND FLOOR: Go to the ground floor for the Testing Center (Virginia Placement Test/VPT for English & math, make-up tests, and proctored exams), the walk-in Writing Center (help with papers for any class), and the Link Lab (computers for student use).

BROWN LIBRARY, MAIN FLOOR: Go to the main floor Academic Link for free tutoring/academic success programs, such as one-on-one and group tutoring programs and the walk-in Math Center. Computers and study rooms are also available for your use.

BROWN LIBRARY, TOP FLOOR: Go to the top floor for Library Services. There you will find quiet, comfortable study areas. You will also find print resources (books, magazines, newspapers, and journals) and access to library databases and other electronic resources and guides.

You need your keys to “Get There.” Let Brown Library help you on your journey.

Get a Good Start!

Get a good start to the academic year by taking advantage of the free resources and services available for you on each floor of the Brown Library building:

BROWN LIBRARY, GROUND FLOOR (GF) = the Testing Center, the walk-in Writing Center, and the Link Lab in room B17. Go to the ground floor to take the Virginia Placement Test (VPT) for English & math, as well as make-up tests, and proctored exams for all asynchronous distance learning courses. The Writing Center provides assistance with papers for any class. The Link Lab-B17 computers are available for student use.

This floor, known as the Link Learning Commons, is home to VWCC’s tutoring/academic success programs such as one-on-one and group tutoring programs and the walk-in Math Center. BROWN LIBRARY, TOP FLOOR (2) = Library Services, a “quiet floor” that is perfect for reading and quiet study. Five study rooms are available for currently-enrolled students to use. Traditional print resources (books, magazines, newspapers, and journals) are also available on this floor, along with access to library databases and other electronic resources and guides.

Brown Library Welcomes You!

Brown Library welcomes all students, faculty, and staff back to campus. We invite everyone to visit our building and take advantage of the resources and services.

Library Services are on the top level (2nd floor) of the library building. This floor is a “quiet floor” that is the perfect peaceful location for reading and quiet study. Five comfortable study rooms are available for currently-enrolled students to use. Traditional print resources (books, magazines, newspapers, and journals) are also available on this floor, along with access to library databases and other electronic resources and guides. Our Circulation and Reference staff members look forward to serving you.

The Academic Link occupies the main level (1st floor) of the library building. This floor, known as the Link Learning Commons, is home to VWCC’s tutoring/academic success programs such as one-on-one and group tutoring programs and the walk-in Math Center. Computers and study rooms are available for collaborative active learning. The Link Learning Commons is a comfortable and invigorating place to study, learn, and work.

The Ground Floor (GF) of the library building hosts the Testing Center, the walk-in Writing Center, and the Link Lab in room B17. The Testing Center administers the Virginia Placement Test (VPT) for English & math, as well as make-up tests, and proctored exams for all asynchronous distance learning courses. The Writing Center provides assistance with papers for any class. The Link Lab-B17 computers are available for student use.
