Next Staff Senate Meeting – Today, May 16, 2014 – Elections to be Held

The next Staff Senate Meeting is today, May 16, 2014, 10:00am – 11:00am in the Natural Science Center, N101.

Elections will be held for the co-chair position currently held by Tara Nepper and the recorder position held by Nicole Bell. Nominations can be sent via e-mail to Marla Whiteside, Tara Nepper or Nicole Bell.

At least one person from each office/department is asked to attend but all full- and part-time classified staff are eligible and encouraged to attend Staff Senate. Staff Senate is supported by the college’s administration.

Maintenance Connection (FMS Work Order System) Upgrade TODAY!

Maintenance Connection, the FMS work order system, will be upgraded Friday, May 16 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. There may be intermittent interruptions in accessibility to Maintenance Connection during the upgrade but it will be minimal. Should you have trouble submitting a work order during this time, please try after 1 p.m. once the upgrade is complete.

If you have a saved Favorite/Bookmark to the current FMS/Maintenance Connection Work Order System, you will need to refresh it after 1 p.m. Friday.  Click on the Maintenance Connection link on the right hand side of this page after 1 p.m. Friday, May 16 to update your Favorite/Bookmark.

Last Days to Tell Your Students About Scholarship!

Requirements: Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0, high school graduate or have a GED, and be enrolled in a minimum of six (6) credits at Virginia Western in Fall 2014.

The Virginia Western Educational Foundation has over $140,000 in scholarship funds available for academic excellence or financial need to help you reach your educational goals.  You don’t have to receive federal financial aid to qualify for financial need scholarships.

CCAP Diploma Campaign

2014 Diploma Campaign

During the month of May, Kroger and Stop In Food Stores are partnering with Virginia Western Community College to support the Community College Access Program (CCAP) and make college possible for local high school graduates.


Stop by any local Kroger or Stop In Food Stores location and donate $1 or $5 when you check out. All proceeds directly benefit CCAP and help bolster the economic base of the Roanoke Valley.

Summer TOTAL Workshops for Professional Development

VWCC has joined a consortium with BRCC, NRCC, WCC, VWCC, and VHCC to maximize resources and offer as many TOTAL classes to faculty as possible as NOVA will not be offering any TOTAL courses this summer. Therefore, when registering for the VCCS TOTAL courses offered this summer through the Southwest Consortium, please select the BRCC section as stated in Step 5 of the instructions below.

Each workshop focuses on a single topic for your professional development plan. Registration is open and closes at noon on May 16 for the May 19 workshops, and closes at noon on July 3 for the July 7 workshops. The schedule is:

May 19, 2014 - VCCS: Designing Rubrics and Providing Feedback (Please select BRCC Section) - 4 weeks - Carrie Halpin and Don Taylor

July 7, 2014 - VCCS: Preparing Student Learning Objectives (Please select BRCC Section) - 2 weeks - Ramona Coveny

July 7, 2014 - VCCS: Developing Collaborative Activities (Please select BRCC Section) - 2 weeks - Ian Griffin

Instructions for Accessing VCCS TOTAL Courses via the Knowledge Center:

  1. Login to the VWCC Knowledge Center: https://covkc.virginia.gov/vwcc/
  2. Go to Learning Center >> Course Catalog
  3. Enter Keywords: VCCS:TOTAL in the Search Text box. Click Search.
  4. Click on the course link of the course in which you would like to enroll, e.g. VCCS: TOTAL Designing Rubrics and Providing Feedback Workshop
  5. Click on the BRCC section.
  6. Click Enroll. You will see that your status changes to “Enrolled.” You will also see a statement confirming the date you enrolled: e.g. You enrolled in this item on 1/13/2014.
  7. After enrolling, you will be able to see the course(s) in which you are enrolled in the Scheduled Training box located on My Homepage: Home >> My Workspace >> My Homepage.
