Relay for Life – this weekend!

Only 3 more days before our Virginia Western Keep Calm and Cure On team participates in Relay for Life. What is Relay for Life? It’s a walk to raise money for cancer research.

So far out team has raised over $1300! We are on our way to reaching our goal of $1500!

Want to help?

Virginia Western team members raising $20 or more will receive a free t-shirt! Shirts will be available in the Marketing Office on Friday, March 14th or picked up at the walk on Saturday.

Online Calendar Reservation Form Training

Need to brush up on using the college's online calendar and reservation system, or just want a refresher?

Virginia Master Teacher Seminar

Virginia Western supports its faculty in attending the Virginia Master Teacher Seminar.   The seminar is held each summer on the campus of Hampden-Sydney College and is sponsored by Southside Virginia Community College.  This year, the Seminar will take place July 6 -10, 2014.  For additional information, please visit www.vamasterteacher.com.  If you are interested in attending, please make your Dean aware of your interest no later than Monday, March 17, 2014.

Professional development activities include on-campus training, VCCS opportunities for conferences and grants (http://www.vccs.edu/careers/office-of-professional-development/), non-VCCS travel and training, and educational aid for courses offered both on campus and at other institutions.

The Professional Development Committee has worked hard to improve the professional development funding process for 2014-15. Changes to the process include simplification of the application, inclusion of an option for attending more costly national conferences, and an automated submission process. Professional development funding is available to all full-time faculty and staff through this application process.

The deadline for applications is Sunday, March 16, 2014.

Beware of phishing emails/calls

Recently we have had a surge of attempts to gain access to personal information in various ways.  Here are some tips to keep in mind when speaking about sensitive data.

If you do not know the company or person you are speaking with, you should not offer any information.

If you are suspicious of any attempts to gain information, you should state you do not feel comfortable disclosing that information and end the discussion.

If you receive an email that requires you to click a link to enter personal information, you should delete the email.

If you receive a call requesting your voicemail password, you should not give out your information.

As always, if something seems suspicious DON’T do it.  Please contact the Help Desk if you believe you have been targeted by one of these attempts and include as much information as possible (caller phone number, name, email details, etc.).

VRS Hybrid Informational Sessions

Open Enrollment for VRS Members

January 1, 2014 – April 30, 2014

The VRS Hybrid Retirement Plan combines the features of a defined benefit plan and a defined contribution plan.  VRS members may opt-in to the plan during the open enrollment period.

Who is Eligible to Opt-In?

At Virginia Western, only current VRS members are eligible to opt-in.  Optional Retirement Plan (ORP) and Virginia Law Officers' Retirement System (VaLORS) are not eligible to opt-in.

Is The Plan Right For You?

You can answer this question by attending one of the following informational sessions all located in the Human Resources Training Room in Fishburn Hall:

Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at 1:30 p.m.

Thursday, April 17, 2014 at 2:30 p.m.

Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at 10:00 a.m.

Current VRS members are not affected by the new plan; however, you do have the opportunity to opt-in. If you do not wish to opt-in, you do not need to do anything!

If you are considering opting into the plan, you are strongly encouraged to attend one of these informational sessions.

Your decision to enroll in the Hybrid is irrevocable.

 

Annual Leave Donation Request

In accordance with Department of Human Resources Management Policy 4.35 “Leave Sharing”, Virginia Western Community College is seeking employees who wish to donate their annual leave.  Annual leave donations received will be applied to supplement the pay of a fellow employee who has exhausted all of their leave during their absence to care for a family member who has a serious health care condition.  Annual leave donations will cease when the employee returns to work; or, if still absent from work, Family Medical Leave has been exhausted or no longer qualifying.

  • Annual leave donations are required by policy to be in minimum increments of 8 hours.
  • Only annual leave may be donated.
  • Leave that has been processed may not be reclaimed.

Frozen: Friday in Whitman!

Encountering Everest-like conditions and a hilarious snowman named Olaf, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom from an eternal winter. Rated PG. Free Frozen treats and hot chocolate provided!
