Email/Phone Security Tips

The Help Desk has recently received several reports of faculty and staff encountering bogus emails and phone calls in an attempt to gain access to our network and/or private information. Due to subsequent discussions about security we would like to share a couple of tips that will help all of us avoid any issues in the future.

• The Help Desk will never send out notices that instruct you to click a link to increase your mailbox size. If you receive one of these notifications it is a phishing attempt to gain access to your personal information. Delete it.
• The Help Desk will never make phone calls that instruct a staff member to dial/enter their voicemail password. If you receive one of these calls it is a hacker attempting to use your password to bypass restrictions in the system.
• The Help Desk will never ask for your username and password via e-mail.

As always, if something seems suspicious DON’T do it. Please contact the Help Desk if you believe you have been targeted by one of these attempts and include as much information as possible (caller phone number, name, email details, etc.).
