Full-Time Fridays

Are you a General Studies Student or in pursuit of a degree in General Studies? Have you considered Full Time Friday(ftf) program? Virginia Western Community College’s Full-Time Fridays(ftf) program allows students to earn an Associate of Science Degree in General Studies while balancing priorities to their work, families and life in general.  Full-Time Fridays will give you the opportunity to earn a General Studies degree in just two years through on-campus courses on Fridays, coupled with hybrid classes.

With Full-Time Fridays, students will be able to take all their courses from 8 a.m.- 6:30 p.m. on Fridays and still be able to manage obligations to their work, family and themselves. The typical course load of 60 credit hours will be spread over Fall and Spring semesters for two years.

FTF’s students enjoy the benefits of one on one personalized advising and a unique program that strives to help students reach their higher education goals. For more information about enrolling in Full-Time Fridays, visit: http://www.virginiawestern.edu/academics/fridays.php, or contact coordinator Alexander Scott at ascott@virginiawestern.edu or 540-857-7247.

Entrepreneurship Plus Program – NOW OPEN for Enrollment

Virginia Western is launching a revised business course this fall that teaches student and prospective entrepreneurs how to launch their own business in one semester. The Entrepreneurship course (Bus 116) will offer unique hands-on experience.

Virginia Western’s standard tuition rates apply to the course. The college’s Workforce Solutions will host shorter workshops, which will give a sample of the content. Open enrollment is available now at www.virginiawestern.edu.

The course is intended to be a launching pad for businesses in the Roanoke Valley. Based upon enrollment, 20 – 30 viable new businesses per semester are possible.

The Small Business Development Center and Virginia Department of Business Assistance are assisting with the course, and Downtown Roanoke Inc. has pledged to help students with the fledging enterprises, particularly as they look for spaces in which to open shop.

Faculty, The Academic Link Needs Your Help!

The Academic Link (VWCC’s academic resource center) is actively recruiting students to work as tutors for the fall semester. Tutors are needed for all subject areas, but especially for all levels of math, all sciences, computer programming, engineering, information technology, economics, philosophy, and statistics. To qualify, students must have and maintain at least a 3.0 overall GPA and have an A or B in the subject for which they’d like to tutor. An instructor referral is a plus. If you have students you believe have what it takes to be a good tutor, please send them our way. Tutoring is a great way for students to earn some extra money while helping out their fellow students. Interested students can contact Linda Whitlock at 857-6442, email tutoring@virginiawestern.edu, or stop by the tutoring center on the ground floor of Brown Library to pick up an application.

Electronic SARF Parallel Test

Supervisors and Support Staff,

Information and Educational Technologies will be doing a parallel test of the SARF process from August 1st thru 16th.   If you submit SARFs you will be impacted by this test.  What this means to you is that you need to fill out a paper SARF and route as usual.  You will also need to submit an electronic SARF with the same information.  The electronic SARF is located on the VWConnect homepage on the right-hand side under “Links.”  There is also a "How to" guide  located on VWConnect that may help you if you were unable to attend one of the three Supervisor Roundtable training sessions.

This test will allow us to gauge the effectiveness of the electronic SARF and flush out any issues with the process.  Any and all questions should be directed to Help Desk during the parallel test.  We appreciate your participation in this process!
