Your opinions matter! Concerns expressed in previous Employee Surveys have been addressed through such items as:
- changes in our governance structure
- strengthened oversight of dual enrollment courses

Virginia Employee Public Service Week Celebration

Every May, state agencies across Virginia will celebrate the hard work and dedication state employees provide to the Commonwealth of Virginia through a recognition event in honor of Virginia Employee Public Service Week.

Due to the operational challenges that Virginia Western faces during the traditional recognition period, the college will be celebrating Virginia Employee Public Service Week on Wednesday, April 17, 2013:

Virginia Employee Public Service Week Celebration

Natural Science Center

1:30 – 3:30 p.m.

Wednesday, April 17, 2013

Ice cream will be provided by the Homestead Creamery truck just outside of the Natural Science Center.   Be sure to bring your employee badge and sign-in at that time to receive your treat!

For your additional pleasure, an assortment of games will be available within the Natural Science Center!

  • Cake Walk (4 times:  1:30, 2:00, 2:30, and 3:00) – play the game for your opportunity to win a yummy cake!
  • Jelly Bean Guessing Game   Be the employee to guess the closest amount of jelly beans in the jar and win the jar of candy!
  • Name that Baby  Identify your co-workers as children.  The employee that guesses the most correct responses is a genius and will have their name displayed as the winner adjacent to the Wall of Fame!  Do you want your baby picture displayed for this game?  Send it to Human Resources not later than April 12th – be sure to include a note with your name on it to identify yourself!
  • Corn Hole
  • Jinga (giant tumbling towers)

Employees will also have the opportunity to recognize a work-related accomplishment or noteworthy action of a co-worker on a paper brick wall for the college’s Wall of Fame.  The Wall of Fame will be displayed during the traditional Virginia Employee Public Service Week (TBA). Three (3) employees will be awarded a recognition gift based on the recognition action (brick) completed by your peer.

Thank you for making a difference!

A special thank you is extended to Carlton Mabe and Tara Nepper for their contributions to this event, and also to the dedicated members of the Employee Recognition Committee!

Now Open! Sidewalk from Lot 14 and Lot 8E to Anderson Hall

The new walkway from Lot 14 and Lot8E to the back of Anderson Hall is now open for use. Restoration of the grass along the new sidewalk and areas where old sidewalk was removed will be completed soon. The sidewalk is designed to use stairs for level changes and have relatively flat walkways between stairs for ease of pedestrian use. The improvements to Lot 8E, which were implemented last summer, were planned to off-set new sidewalk pavement. That is why some asphalt is being removed. This is part of our being environmentally friendly. As budget permits landscaping and sitting benches at the circular landings will be added so one can enjoy the views, read a book or just rest a moment.

Update on Elevated Pedestrian Walkway at Business Science

The outdoor pedestrian causeway at Business will be finished sometime in April. The walkway will have a new nonskid surface. The new handrail will be fitted with LED lights which illuminate acrylic panels placed intermittently along the path. The columns supporting the elevated walk will have decorative wrappings at ground level designed to enhance the new plaza area outside the food court.

Library Renovation Update

The top floor of Brown Library is being renovated and prepared to open for Fall Semester 2013. The week of March 25th the contractor will be installing a new ceiling. A pneumatic nailer will be used to fasten the ceiling hangars to the structure and this nailer sounds like a small gun. If you are in the Library or the vicinity of the library and hear this sound please do not be alarmed.
