Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Update

Great progress has been made this semester by the Advising Teamwork QEP development team and committees. A big thank you to all the faculty, staff, and students who have worked on the project this semester. Work will continue in spring 2013 to develop the full implementation plan. Below is an overview of the progress to date.

  • Our working goal of “Through team advising, students will learn how to set and achieve their own educational success goals” was decided.
  • The preliminary outcomes were developed. They are: (The student will be able to ...)
    • Identify appropriate advising resources related to their goals.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of the advising structure.
    • Develop an academic plan
  • The IA committee is focusing on logo creation. They also have developed and approved three suggested titles for the QEP. A survey will be circulated in the daily bulletin in the coming days, for you to vote on the best title.
  • A target audience, first year students who are enrolled in a degree program and taking SDV, was chosen, and it was decided that this group will be targeted beginning with fall 2014.
  • A preliminary implementation plan was completed and shared with the Executive Staff. This preliminary plan will be shared with the campus community at the Wednesday, December 12, 2012, QEP/SACS update session (at noon in the Natural Science Center). This session is open to all faculty, staff, and students who would like to learn more about the project.

If you have questions, suggestions, or concerns related to the QEP, please feel free to contact Kristel Clark at kclark@virginiawestern.edu or 540-857-6218.

Special Notice Concerning College Deliveries

When submitting eVA orders, please be sure to indicate the Ship To Address on your orders.  This is accomplished by clicking on the drop down menu next to Ship To: and choosing one of the address selections listed in the link below:

http://www.virginiawestern.edu/communications/CollegeDeliveries.docx

Companies have delivered packages to the FMS building with no indication of who the package is for and during hours when the college is closed.  When at all feasible, packages should be delivered directly to the buildings and/or department or division.  If packages are delivered to FMS directly, receiving hours are 7:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Packages are not received when the college is closed on weekends or on holidays.  If a fork lift is needed in order to offload an order, an advanced notice of 24 hours is required.

Best practice would suggest that we make vendors aware of our holiday closings and request delivery prior to the holiday break on 12/19/12 at 12 o'clock noon or after January 2, 2013 when we return. This can be done by adding a comment to the order and clicking in the box that makes it visible to the vendor.

Tutors Needed

The REACH office provides support for students with disabilities, and we are looking for a few good tutors! We pay $9 to $11 an hour based on education level. While we are interested in hiring for all subjects, upper level math and the sciences are especially needed.

If you know of past or current successful students who may be interested, would you mind referring them to our office? They can contact Rick Robers at rrobers@virginiawestern.edu or 857-7286. They can also pick up an application in Webber Room 212.

Campus Leadership

An announcement was made to the faculty and staff in BET on Monday by Jim Poythress concerning the leadership of BET. Because of the individual nature that Jim has with his academic school, we felt it best that Jim communicate first with BET before a campus announcement was made. But as word is getting out, it is important now to update the campus. While Jim is still officially Dean of Business, Engineering, and Technology, for the immediate future he will lead the Workforce Development and Economic Development areas of the college but not lead the academic school. BET will be led on an interim basis by Debbie Yancey until a more permanent situation is established.

Please direct any business associated with Workforce to Jim Poythress and any business related to BET to Debbie Yancey.

To help meet educational expenses, Virginia Western Community College is pleased to participate in Nelnet’s tuition payment plan.  For a non-refundable fee of $25.00, Nelnet allows monthly, interest-free tuition payments. The earlier students enroll the more payment options they may have. The payment plan for Spring 2013 will begin on November 12, 2012.

If a payment plan is not established or if tuition is not paid by December 6, students who registered early for classes will be dropped and will need to repeat the registration process. Financial Aid students are protected from enrollment cancellation up to the amount of their Financial Aid award. Financial Aid students should pay any differences between their total award and the amount due to prevent enrollment cancellation.
