APPLY FOR NEW ENDOWED BUSINESS CHAIR

The Virginia Western Educational Foundation this fall will award its first endowed chair, the Donald G. Smith Endowed Teaching Chair. This honor was conceived in 2006 to recognize and reward outstanding teaching at Virginia Western Community College. It is named for Don Smith, retired CEO of Roanoke Electric Steel Corp.

Every two years, funds provided by the Chair will be awarded to an outstanding instructor of business administration-related coursework. The honored teacher may use the funds ($5,000 annually, for each of two years) to enhance the quality of their curriculum, facilities or instruction in any way they deem necessary (within VCCS policy). At the end of the honored faculty’s term, he/she is expected to publish a report or provide a public forum in his/her field – a presentation, a workshop, bringing in an outside speaker, etc.

Eligibility

A completed application must be received by the Educational Foundation by May 29, 2015.

The honored teacher will be notified by Aug. 15, 2015, and the award announced at faculty in-service for the 2015-16 academic year.

Law Enforcement Memorial Service

On May 14, 2015 at 4 p.m. the 2015 Law Enforcement Memorial Service will be held at St. John Lutheran Church located at 4608 Brambleton Avenue. This year Virginia Western’s Campus Police Department has the honor of hosting this most solemn event. The service takes place each year during the National Law Enforcement Week to honor the Roanoke Valley Law Enforcement Officers who have been killed in the line of duty. There are probably more of them than you may think who have died. We humbly offer you this invitation to attend, the event is open to the community. The service lasts about 45 minutes and will be followed by great refreshments donated by Mission BBQ. Please come out and support the valley’s law enforcement on this most important day, we would love to see you there.
