Introduction
The Information Technology Department offers several programs of study designed to prepare students for the exciting world of Information Technology. The U.S. Department of Labor predicts a strong need for well-trained Information Technology (IT) professionals into 2016 with 5 of the 30 fastest occupations being in the IT career field. The Roanoke Local Work Area also shows strong growth in the IT career fields. Industries of every type depend on IT to stay competitive, manage large amounts of information, stay connected with customers and reduce costs. In fact, almost every facet of industry depends directly or indirectly on IT for its success.

PROGRAMS
The Associate of Applied Science in Information Technology provides students with the well-rounded education needed to become a fully productive member of industry. Students will learn the vital skills needed to enter the modern, in-demand field of Information Technology. While getting a well-rounded grounding in business skills and IT, students will concentrate in one of 4 areas of IT – Database and Program Developer; Geographic Information System (GIS) Developer; Network and Database Administrator; and Web Programmer. The degree is designed to ensure that graduates have the knowledge that employers will look for in their employers.

For students that already have a degree and want to update their technical qualifications or just wish to get started in the IT career field right away, they can complete one or more of the career studies offered. Each career study concentrates on one area of IT and prepares the student for entry-level positions. Students can concentrate in such areas as network administration, programming, and technical support. Career studies can usually be completed in one academic year or two semesters. All courses completed during a career study can be applied towards the Associate of Applied Science in Information Technology should students decide to continue their education past the career study.

The Associates of Science with a Computer Science Specialization is designed for students planning to transfer to a 4-year college and majoring in Computer Science. Students will have a chance to take many of the general education, Mathematics, and Science courses required in the first two years of a four year program. Students in this degree program should consult with advisors at the four-year college of interest to determine specific requirements that need to be met.
