Horticulture

Introduction

Purpose The horticulture program is designed to prepare students for employment in the horticulture industry or a related field and to provide training for those who are currently working in the field and want to improve and upgrade their existing knowledge and skills. The major part of the curriculum is devoted to specialized horticulture courses and to the development of technical and communication skills necessary for a successful career.

During the second year of the two-year program, the student has the option of specializing in either interior landscaping/floriculture or landscaping. Four short programs—floral design and indoor plant care, landscaping and outdoor plant care, plant propagation and production, and urban tree management—are available through Virginia Western’s career studies certificate program for individuals who are not interested in completing the full two-year program.
