To participate in a Dual Enrollment class, students must complete each of these steps:
Students must complete PART I of the Virginia Western online application for admission to the college during the spring semester but before June 1.
Select High School & College Dual Credit (041) as the reason for taking classes.
As soon as you successfully complete PART I of the online application, you will be assigned an EMPLID or student identification number. About a week later, you will receive a letter of acceptance from the college which also includes your EMPLID. In early August, preceding the beginning of the school year, another letter from the college will be sent advising you of your EMPLID.
Your parent or guardian must complete PART II of the application and sign, date and return it to the Admissions Office at the College.

Dual-enrollment students must complete placement testing if they intend to complete a dual-enrollment course with an English or mathematics prerequisite. Additionally, dual-enrollment students must complete placement testing in English if they intend to enroll in a writing and/or reading intensive course or if they wish to be considered for acceptance into the Virginia Western Regional Academy for Advanced. Dual-enrollment students are not required to complete placement testing in order to enroll in occupational/technical courses that do not carry an English and/or mathematics prerequisite.
For more information on placement testing requirements for specific classes, please refer to the "Dual Enrollment Placement and Prerequisite Guide."Before you can take a placement test, you must receive a Compass Testing Form from your guidance counselor.
Click here for more information on placement testing.
Additionally, VWCC requires students who are 14, 15, or 16 years of age to secure an Exemption Certificate from their guidance counselor, which lets the college know that the student is academically prepared for college-level work—either through previous academic achievement or through the guidance counselor’s authorization. This form is usually completed in late August or early September when students begin registering for dual classes. These students are also required to complete the placement tests before they can be registered for dual enrollment classes.
