School of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences

The School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (LASS) was created in January 2010 as the result of a merger between the former Humanities and Social Science divisions. LASS houses a diverse group of departments and programs.

Our departments include Administration of Justice, Art, Communication Studies and Theatre, Early Childhood Development, Economics, English, Foreign Language, Geography, Health and Physical Education, History, Human Services, Music, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology.

Degree Programs include the General Studies, Liberal Arts, and Social Science Associate's degree programs; Administration of Justice, Communication Design, Early Childhood Development, and Human Services Associate of Applied Science degrees; Exercise Science and Personal Training and General Education Certificates; and Early Childhood Development, and Wellness Career Studies Certificates.

For students considering transfer, the General Studies, Liberal Arts, and Social Science degrees offer the core classes required by most four year institutions. These degrees are flexible enough to allow the graduate to pursue most bachelors' degrees. For those who plan to spend just one year at Virginia Western before transferring, the General Education certificate provides a strong foundation in the core educational competencies and provides students with a competitive advantage when transferring.

For students interested in career development, the Administration of Justice, Communication Design, Early Childhood Development, Exercise Science and Personal Training, Firefighting and Prevention, and Human Services programs offer opportunities in each of these areas.

In addition to our academic programs, LASS sponsors the Community Art Collection, which is open to the public year-round; the Art Gallery, which houses rotating shows of professional and student work; the Theatre, which produces two shows per year and sponsors a summer children's theatre camp, and the campus fitness center.

There is always something exciting going on in LASS. Come check us out!
