ESOL Programming
To meet the needs of ESOL students, we offer an array of courses designed for learners at a variety of levels.
We appreciate the barriers faced by many of our ESOL students including transportation concerns, family and
work responsibilities, as well as financial limitations.
To meet these needs we offer the following courses:
- ESLA 2665: English for Speakers of Other Languages. This is a non-credit class designed for students who are
beginning to learn to read, write, and speak the English language. The cost for this class is $85. No other tuition
is required. Books are provided, but students will need to purchase a workbook. This class is offered in the evenings.
- EDUC 2151: This course is designed for students whose VPT-English (Virginia Placement Test-English)
score did not allow his/her placement in a developmental English course. EDUC 2151 is a non-credit class that provides
extensive integrated reading and writing instruction to prepare students to retake the Virginia Placement Test-English.
- ENF 1 (Preparing for College English 1): This is an 8-credit developmental English course that provides
integrated reading and writing instruction for students who require extensive preparation to succeed in college-level English
courses. Students will place into this course based on the VPT-English (Virginia Placement Test-English). Upon successful
completion and faculty recommendation, students move into ENF 3 (if they require additional preparation) or into college-level
English (if they require no additional preparation).
- ENF 2 (Preparing for College English 2): This is a 4-credit developmental English course that provides
integrated reading and writing instruction for students who require intermediate preparation to succeed in college-level English
courses. Students will place into this course based on the VPT-English (Virginia Placement Test-English). Upon successful
completion and faculty recommendation, students will move into ENF 3(if they require additional preparation) or into college-level
English (if they require no additional preparation).
- ENF 3 (Preparing for College English 3): This is a 2-credit developmental English course that provides integrated
reading and writing instruction for students who require minimal preparation to succeed in college-level English courses. Students
will place into this course based on the VPT-English (Virginia Placement Test-English). At Virginia Western, students in ENF 3 will
be co-enrolled in English 111.
