Mammography Imaging

The Mammography courses are offered annually in distance hybrid format and designed to prepare selected registry eligible students and registered technologists to qualify as contributing members of the allied health interdisciplinary team which has need for highly skilled Mammography technologists. Upon completion of the Virginia Western curriculum and successful completion and documentation of all required clinical competencies as set forth by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT); technologists will be eligible to apply to take the National Registry examination leading to advanced certification as a Registered Radiographer in Mammography by the ARRT.


Applicants for Mammography must have completed an approved program in radiography. The student must be registered or registry eligible by the appropriate certification agency. Applicants must have maintained a "C" average in past program courses in the discipline of certification.

Application Process

Update: Didactic course revised to be offered as a distance course for Spring 2015.

RAD 249 - Comprehensive Foundations of Breast Imaging - 3 credits -- Dynamic course, Feb. 9 - March 20, 2015.
Clinical: RAD 252 - Foundational Mammography Clinical Training - 1 credit -- will run from Feb. 9 to the end of Spring semester.

Applicants must complete an application to VWCC, provide imaging education school transcript, provide a minimum of 2 letters of reference and have an interview (phone or in person) with the Radiography Program Director or a designated Radiography faculty prior to formal admission. The student in Mammography must abide by all community college policies as well as clinical policies while enrolled in the program.

Students are responsible for Internet access for distance hybrid courses, course texts, clinical uniforms if participating in the clinical course and transportation to and from the clinical site.
