Mammography Imaging

The Mammography courses are offered annually in distance hybrid format and designed to prepare selected registry eligible students and registered technologists to qualify as contributing members of the allied health interdisciplinary team which has need for highly skilled Mammography technologists. Upon completion of the Virginia Western curriculum and successful completion and documentation of all required clinical competencies as set forth by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT); technologists will be eligible to apply to take the National Registry examination leading to advanced certification as a Registered Radiographer in Mammography by the ARRT.


Applicants for Mammography must have completed an approved program in radiography or be registry eligible by end of their last term 2nd year. The student must be registered or registry eligible by the appropriate certification agency. Applicants must have maintained a "C" average in past program courses in the discipline of certification.

RAD 249 - Comprehensive Foundations of Breast Imaging - 3 credits

Clinical: RAD 252 - Foundational Mammography Clinical Training - 1 credit -- will run in the following Fall Semester 2015. Students must successfully complete RAD 249 before taking RAD 252.

Applicants must complete both an application to VWCC and a Mammography Admission Application (PDF), provide imaging education school transcript, provide a minimum of 2 letters of reference and have an interview (phone or in person) with the Radiography Program Director or a designated Radiography faculty prior to formal admission. The student in Mammography must abide by all community college policies as well as clinical policies while enrolled in the program.

Students are responsible for Internet access for distance courses, course texts, clinical uniforms if participating in the clinical course and transportation to and from the clinical site.

2015 Clinical orientation requirements:
If you plan on taking the clinical mammography course-RAD 252-lcr.- you must complete the following BEFORE you will be allowed to begin clinicals. All materials must be submitted to Dr. Mary Loritsch, Program Director and will be shared with Lewis Gale Mammography clinical faculty at least 3 weeks before class begins - July 24, 2015.

  2. Provide copy of Current CPR card
  3. Virginia Western Film Badge and ID Badge. Contact Ms. Nolley for Film Badge-857-6197 and Natasha Lee in Student Activities for the ID badge - 857-6326. A $25 amount will be charged when you pay tuition for the maintaining of the film badge. When mammography clinical is over the film badge must be returned to Ms. Nolley or you will be charged a replacement fee of $65.00 and the Virginia Western ID badge returned to Dr. Loritsch.
  4. Proof of current flu vaccine; Hep B vaccines-if it has been 10 or more years then the Hep B series will have to be obtained again; Varicella and Rubella immunity; and a TB skin test within 12 months or a chest x-ray exam with report.
  5. 30 days before beginning clinical, a 9 panel drug test and a background test must be obtained. The background and drug test cost is $84.00. More information on this testing can be found at this site. (Please enter package code ir31bgdt.)
    These tests must be scheduled and completed by July 24, 2015.
  6. Additional background test by Lewis Gale Hospital - no cost to student.
