Motorcycle Rider Safety Course

Overview

The Basic Rider Course (BRC) provides classroom and actual motorcycle operator training in a controled environment.

In the Basic Rider Course, students will have the opportunity to learn:

  • To have more fun by riding a motorcycle safely.
  • The basics: what to wear, how to start and stop your motorcycle, and motorcycle controls.
  • Street strategies to avoid trouble and stay safe.
  • How to maneuver a motorcycle in tough situations. Swerving, avoiding collisions, special situations, lane changes, passing, and avoiding hazards.

You are taught techniques such as:

  • Basic motorcycle operation
  • Straight-line riding, turning, shifting and stopping
  • Cornering, braking and swerving

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation certifies our Instructors/RiderCoaches.

A valid automobile license or a motorcycle learner's permit is required to participate in this class.

Trainer motorcycles are provided.

No previous riding experience is necessary; however a good sense of balance is required.

Class Days/Hours

Students MUST be on time for all class sessions. NO ADMITTANCE for late arrivals.

Friday: 6:00 PM - 9:30 PM
Saturday & Sunday: 7:30 AM - 12:30 PM OR 1:00 - 6:00 PM

*Weekday classes: 1st day 8am-12noon, 2nd and 3rd days 7:30am-12:30pm

Tuition & Additional Materials

Tuition

Composite tuition, subject to change

Virginia Resident: $129.09 per credit hour
Non-Virginia Resident: $320.69 per credit hour

Additional Materials

For the riding portion of the course, students must provide protective gear.

The protective gear consists of:

  • Full coverage or three-quarter DOT-approved motorcycle helmet and eye protection
  • Sturdy over-the-ankle footwear
  • Long non-flare denim pants or material of equivalent or better durability
  • Long-sleeved shirt or jacket
  • Full-fingered glvoes preferably leather

Students will not be permitted to ride without this protective gear. Helmets are available if needed.

The instructor has the final authority in determining if a student shall be permitted to participate in the riding portion of the course.

There is a knowledge and a riding skills test at the end of the course. Passing these two tests earns the student a Motorcycle Safety Foundation Completion Card and a Virginia licensing waiver, subject to VA DMV license requirements.

Directions

From I-81
Take Exit 143, Travel South on I-581 to the Colonial Avenue Exit and follow the signs for 7/10 of a mile.

From VA 419
Turn North onto Colonial Avenue and proceed 1.9 miles.

Training will be conducted on the Virginia Western Community College Campus, in Webber Hall, Room W121. Students should park in front of the building between the white lines. (Campus Map)
